Chang Zhenchen, 49, is a deputy chief engineer of Changchun Railway Passenger Car Co., Ltd. Everyone in the company who knows him well praises him. Because it is he who led his team after ten years of hard work, creating the “brains” of many “Made in China” high-speed EMUs that are now running in the land of Shenzhou.
Ten years ago, after graduation, Dr. Chang Zhenchen came to the post-doctoral research station of Changke Co., Ltd. to take charge of digestion and absorption of CRH high-speed EMU train network control system. For rail transit equipment, the train network control system is equivalent to the “brain” and “central nervous system” of human beings. It controls and monitors all kinds of equipment on the train. It is one of the most critical core technologies of rail passenger cars, and also the focus of foreign technology blockade.
At that time, China lagged far behind European and American countries in EMU control technology, but the demand for high-speed EMUs was imminent. For this reason, Chang Zhenchen began to explore the autonomy of the networked control system for EMU trains. Especially when he was the head of the R&D team, he was sleepless, forgetful and painstaking. He spent 365 days a year, one third of his time on business trips, and the remaining two-thirds of his time was almost devoted to R&D. He worked in the company for ten years. He never worked in the company. Give yourself a complete vacation.
From the beginning, the training of Alstom Company, the importer of high-speed EMUs, was not successful. The company’s learning plan does not include the “most important” content that Chang Zhenchen wants to learn. Finally, after several efforts, we finally got the core vehicle control network data – more than 3000 pages of Italian logic map. It took Chang Zhenchen and his team members eight months to understand all the control logic in the picture because of the confidentiality of the technology.
After the “return of learning”, CRH5 EMUs imported and assembled from the whole vehicle have begun to run off-line. However, due to Alstom’s design flaws and lack of consideration of China’s operating environment, the newly operating EMUs have successively failed. According to Chang Zhenchen, foreigners know what the problem is, but they don’t tell us because they don’t want their core technology to be known.
To this end, Chang Zhenchen and his team are determined to develop their own technology. Finally, in just over a month, they solved what the French call a half-year wait. After 8 months of analysis and test, the network control system of high-speed EMUs, which belongs to China itself, has been formed. With the further efforts of Chang Zhenchen team, at the end of 2012, the CRH5 high-speed EMU network control system developed by them finally passed the project evaluation and trial evaluation organized by China Railway Corporation. At present, the trial vehicle has operated about 780,000 kilometers, and the technical evaluation work has been successfully completed. This means that the networked control system developed independently in China can be applied to all high-speed EMUs. The key technologies of high-speed rail manufacturing in China are no longer subject to foreign restrictions.
It is also a story of climbing the peak, self-reliance and self-reliance, and exciting. Considering that China’s high-speed rail products and complete sets of technologies are being exported to developed countries such as Europe and the United States, we have reason to believe that in the near future, the dream of China’s manufacturing powers will become a reality, because today, there are still tens of millions of Chang Zhenchen ministers who are struggling diligently.
