Preparation of rice-scale single crystal graphene in China

Graphene is a typical two-dimensional light element quantum material system with superior quantum properties. Many quantum phenomena and quantum effects have been observed in the graphene system in the scientific community. Graphene has become an important quantum system in the field of condensed matter physics research, and has broad application prospects in the fields of quantum information, quantum computing and quantum communication. How to obtain large-size single crystal graphene is a hotspot and a difficult point in the research field of graphene, and is the basis for realizing the industrial application of graphene. Although the preparation of the meter-scale polycrystalline graphene film has been realized by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, the rice-scale single crystal graphene film technology has not been broken. Recently, under the support of the special project of quantum control and quantum information, Liu Kaihui, a researcher of Peking University, Academician Yu Dapeng, and Academician Wang Enge, and their collaborators, after the first ultra-fast growth of graphene single crystals in 2016, Significant progress has been made in the growth of rice-scale single crystal graphene.

The research team converted industrial polycrystalline copper foil into single crystal copper foil, and obtained the largest single crystal Cu(111) foil in the world. It successfully produced the world’s largest in 20 minutes by epitaxial growth technology and ultra-fast growth technology. Epitaxial single crystal graphene material of size (5 x 50 cm2). The research results provide the necessary scientific basis for the rapid growth of rice-scale single crystal graphene, laying a foundation for the industrial application of graphene single crystal quantum technology.

The research results were published in the August 2017 issue of Science Bulletin and were selected as cover articles.
